A low pressure system is forecast to intensify rapidly as it moves up the Bay of Fundy and then over southern New Brunswick today. The low is expected to bring significant amounts of rain to Nova Scotia today and tonight. Precipitation will start as snow inland and over northern regions. Total rainfall amounts of 25 to 55 millimetres are forecast with the greatest amounts along the Atlantic coast. As well winds gusting up to a 110 km/h are forecast over eastern sections of the Atlantic coast tonight. Les Suetes winds to 160 km/h are forecast for the Highlands of Cape Breton.

After the coldest low temperature of the season a sw flow brought the temperatures up during the day and into the evening. Temps are to rise overnight with rain tomorrow after a brief period of snow. It will cool off for the weekend.

An intense low is forecast to move up the Bay of Fundy and then over New Brunswick on Friday. The low is expected to bring significant amounts of precipitation which will start as snow in the southwest overnight and spread northward Friday morning. The snow will change to rain and give rainfall amounts of 20 to 30 mm along the Atlantic coast.

Further north the change over will be somewhat slower resulting in up to 10 cm snow followed by about 10 to 20 mm of rain. Neither rainfall or snowfall amounts are expected to reach warning criteria but the combination will none the less result in messy and potentially hazardous driving conditions. Hence the winter storm watch.

The low is also forecast to bring strong winds to most areas with gusts to 120 km/h expected from Margaree Harbour to Bay St Lawrence.

A low pressure system developing south of the Great Lakes is forecast to pass just south of Nova Scotia Monday night bringing a mixed bag of precipitation to most of mainland Nova Scotia. The precipitation associated with this low will start early Monday afternoon over southwestern sections of the province and move northeastward reaching Cape Breton by early Monday evening.

Latest indications are that central and northern Nova Scotia will receive a mixture of snow and ice pellets with amounts possibly exceeding 15 centimetres by Tuesday morning. Meanwhile over southwestern Nova Scotia precipitation will start as snow before changing to ice pellets mixed with freezing rain and then to rain.

The public is advised to monitor future forecasts in case warnings are required.

UNDERWENT RAPID INTENSIFICATION DURING THE DAY ON MONDAY. IT PASSED
SOUTH OF NOVA SCOTIA MONDAY EVENING BEFORE CRASHING INTO SOUTHERN
NEWFOUNDLAND EARLY TUESDAY MORNING. MOSTLY RAIN WAS ORIGINALLY
FORECAST FOR THE BULK OF THE MAINLAND AS WELL AS CAPE BRETON HOWEVER
DUE TO THE RAPID DEEPENING OF THE LOW, SOMEWHAT COLDER AIR WAS
DRAINED INTO THE CYCLONE. THIS RESULTED IN A CHANGEOVER TO SNOW
EARLY IN THE AFTERNOON ACROSS THE PROVINCE AS THE COLDER AIR
FILTERED IN FROM THE NORTHWEST.

A mixed bag of weather today. Temperature rose overnight to around freezing at day break. A squall of wet snow and rain moved through just before 9:00 am. Then rain till 12:30 pm when it became mixed with snow. Heavy snow began near 2:00 pm and ended around 6:00 pm. Lots of accidents and cars off the road being the first snow of the year.

Today we saw a mix of sun and clouds with cool nw winds. Forecast calling for rain and snow tomorrow from a low pressure system forming of the Carolinas. EC forcasting 10 - 15 mm of rain with some snow late afternoon. Storm to intensify off coast, not sure if they have a good handle on this one.

Monday storm update.

The latest on the approaching disturbance is rain for us changing to snow in the evening. 10 - 15 mm of rain and up to 4 cm of snow. The Moncton area is under a snowfall warning with in excess of 20 cm forecasted. Interestingly Accuweather.com has us in line for 8 - 15 cm of snow.

ATLANTIC PROVINCES STORM MOVG INTO ATLC EARLY IN PD AND NEXT SYSTEM DEPENING OFF CAPE COD.. MDL HAD A GOOD HANDLE ON THAT FIRST SYSTEM AND IS EXPECTED TO CONTINUE AS SHOWN BY LATEST 06H QPF VERIF VLD 18Z. COLD AIR INVADING THE GULF OF ST LAWRENCE LIKELY TO GIVE SNOWSQUALLS OVR PRONED AREAS. WRF-NAM IS AN OUTLIER WITH NEXT SYSTEM DEVELOPING OFF ERN SEABORD BEING TOO SLOW. POSITION WISE GEM REG, GLB AND ECMWF ARE IN GOOD AGREEMENT WITH LOW S OF CAPE COD BY 48H. UKMET IS A BIT FARTHER EAST. GEM REG IS THE MOST INTENSE WITH THAT SYSTEM WITH LOW AT 1001MB BY 48H. GLB AT 1005 MB AND GFS NAM AND ECMWF AT 1008 MB ARE WEAKER. THERE ARE POTENTIAL FOR DEVELOPMENT WITH NEGATIVELY TILTED UPR TROF AND CAA BUT GEM REG COULD BE IN THE DEEP SIDE WRT INTENSITY. DIONYSOS SHOWING A LOT OF LATENTE HEAT RELEASE BY END OF PD WITH THAT SYSTEM AND GEM REG COULB BE A CARRY AWAY WITH DEVELOPMENT. WILL GO MORE WITH CONSENSUS AROUND 1005-1008 MB ATM. POSITIONWISE THO GEM REG LOOKS REASONABLE. STAY TUNED FOR TONIGHT FCST.

Friday show showers and light rain during the day with rain and wind during the night. Highest temp was in the morning 13.4*C before it started to drop near lunch. Low was 2.3*C. Before it started to rise again near midnight.

Not much time today but a quick look shows the GEM GLB closer to land than the GFS at 00z Tuesday. Could be interesting. More info tomorrow.
